On Saturday November 9th, the Woodland Star Robotics Club, led by parent Patrick Bynum, competed in a regional competition sponsored by the First Lego League. Named “the Bottlebots,” the group is comprised of 10 WS middle school students. To prepare for the competition, the students designed and programmed a robot to perform a variety of tasks, and created a presentation about using architecture to solve a local problem. The tasks were designed to make the students think outside the box to solve problems. They ranged from pushing a box into a circle, to hanging a token onto a post. For their presentation, the students decided to tackle transitional housing. They proposed turning surplus shipping containers into housing units.
The competition was exciting and educational. Even though this was the team’s first year in the competition, the students made a good showing and came in 5th out of 12 teams!
